On the weekend, the Hodges Sandringham branch sold a waning property at a premium price, with the auction gathering much buyer and media interest.

The Saturday morning auction attracted a crowd of about 80 to the street behind the beachfront, including numerous neighbours who said they were pleased to see the ramshackle property change hands.

The kitchen and bathroom boasted new cabinetry and fittings, but the property was referred to prospective buyers as “uninhabitable” by Hodges agent Amanda Jones.

“It was an interesting renovation but probably optimistic – it still needs a lot work,” said Jones.

Jones had received more than 80 contract requests for the property, but it was two bidders who threw up their hands at the fast-paced auction. It took only seconds for bidding to jump from an opening of $900,000 past the $1.1 million reserve.
